What Are You Reading?



The word for the week is "Read”

Reading something interesting each week for at least 15 minutes keeps you curious, which fuels innovation and creativity.  The health benefits are huge.  Studies have shown that staying mentally stimulated can slow the progress or possibly even prevent Alzheimer’s and Dementia, since keeping your brain active and engaged prevents it from losing power. 

We often overlook the advantages of exercising our brain to keep it functioning at a high level.  It’s important to keep it strong and healthy. 

As we get older, we watch a great deal more television.  And with our DVR’s, On Demand, Netflix and other services, we can binge watch for hours.  In addition to leading to more aggressive behavior, watching too much can reduce your level of intelligence, and make it difficult to concentrate.  In a recent study, it was found that if adults watched less than 2 hours a day and sat less than 3 hours a day, life expectancy in the US would increase by 2 years.

Researchers suggest to keep the brain stimulated, consider playing games, such as chess and doing puzzles.

Let’s not forget that another benefit of reading is that you’ll learn something while building your vocabulary.

Communicate for Outcomes!

The word for the week is "Communication” Communication is central to all aspects of life. It’s a critical skill for maintaining your personal as well as professional relationships. ·          Builds trust ·          Establishes credibility ·          Lays the foundation for great leadership Be aware of the nonverbal cues you receive when speaking your mind.   Silence does not automatically mean agreement. When communicating, ask don’t tell .   Being asked lights up “positive visioning areas” in the brain, associated with greater cognitive and perceptual openness.   Being told can activate “negative emotional attractor” areas of the brain, causing defensiveness. I communicate clearly and listen for clarity and understanding.

Hello?-- Call Me, Please?

The phrase for the week is "Pick Up The Phone." When in doubt about tone or intent, pick up the phone and talk! Let’s face it, something you think is pretty funny, may be lost on someone else.   It bears repeating here that people from different cultures and backgrounds speak and write differently.   You may convince yourself that it’s quicker to send a request or reply by email or text, but if you now have a thread of 10 or more responses, something else is not getting done. Practice my 2-by-2 rule for one week and measure the impact. If you’ve sent two emails or texts and the other person has sent two on the same subject, pick up the phone and stop the madness!
